"The crew came out for a foundation assessment within two days of me calling. They found two cracks I had missed and gave me a written estimate the same day. Work was done in three days, they pulled the permit, and the city inspector signed off without any issues. The cracks are sealed and I finally stopped worrying every spring."
Mark T., Ogden - Foundation repair
"Our chimney mortar had been crumbling for two winters and I kept putting it off. They matched the original mortar color closely enough that I had to look twice to see where the new work was. Finished in one day, cleaned up completely, and told me what to watch for going forward. Would not hesitate to call them again."
Sandra R., Layton - Chimney repair
"We had a retaining wall on the back slope that was starting to bow out. They rebuilt it in sections over four days and it looks solid. The crew explained what caused the original failure so I understood why the new design was different. Pricing was fair and they stuck to the estimate they gave me."
James K., South Ogden - Retaining wall construction

Ogden sits at around 4,300 feet and sees dozens of freeze-thaw cycles each winter - water in cracks expands when it freezes and pushes masonry apart a little more each time. That is why small cracks here tend to grow faster than they would in a milder climate.
Wasatch snowmelt delivers concentrated moisture every spring, and clay-heavy soils in the Ogden area expand as they absorb it, pushing against foundation walls and footings. If your basement shows new damp spots or your foundation cracks seem wider each April, snowmelt pressure is likely the cause.
Homes built before 1960 often used lime-based mortars that are softer and more flexible than modern cement mixes. Replacing those joints with a hard modern mortar can crack the bricks themselves over time, turning a minor repair into an expensive one.
Efflorescence - the white powdery residue you see on brick after wet seasons - means water is moving through the masonry and depositing minerals on the surface. Cleaning it off without fixing the mortar joints just means it comes back next spring.
Interlocking pavers flex slightly with freeze-thaw movement rather than cracking through - which is why they often outlast poured concrete slabs on driveways and walkways in northern Utah. Individual pavers can also be replaced if one is damaged, without disturbing the entire surface. The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute publishes installation and maintenance guidance for cold climates.
Crumbling mortar on the outside is cosmetic and can wait a season - a cracked liner inside the flue is a safety issue that lets carbon monoxide escape into your home and should not wait. If you are unsure which you have, an inspection before you use the fireplace this fall is worth scheduling.
Ogden Concrete & Masonry is a licensed and insured masonry contractor based in Ogden, UT, serving 12 communities across northern Utah since 2019. We have completed masonry projects across 16 service categories - from foundation repair and chimney work to retaining walls, pavers, and stone veneer - giving us the depth to handle whatever your home needs without subcontracting the work out. Do not wait until you can see gaps with the naked eye - by then water has usually already been getting in. Schedule an inspection if your brickwork is more than 20 years old and has not been looked at recently. The Brick Industry Association recommends inspecting masonry every few years in freeze-thaw climates.
Structural masonry work done without a required permit can complicate a home sale, void your homeowner insurance for related claims, and leave you personally liable if something goes wrong. A contractor who discourages permits on structural work is not doing you a favor.
Ask your contractor for before-and-after photos of the work area, not just a completion form. Good foundation and masonry repair is documented - you should be able to show a future buyer exactly what was done, when, and by whom.
Have a project in mind or questions about what your home needs? Call (385) 453-0468 and we will walk through it with you at no charge.
Ogden is Weber County's largest city, home to roughly 87,000 people and built right against the western slope of the Wasatch Range. The city has a long history as a railroad hub, and that history shows in its housing stock - many of the neighborhoods closest to downtown are filled with craftsman bungalows and brick homes built between the 1920s and 1950s. Those homes are solid and well-built, but they have been through a lot of winters, and their mortar joints, foundations, and chimneys reflect that.
The streets around Historic 25th Street and the neighborhoods of Jefferson, Monroe, and Grant are a good example of what much of central Ogden looks like - older brick construction, mature trees, and homes that have had multiple owners over the decades. Weber State University sits on the east bench with views of the Wasatch, and the neighborhoods below it tend to have hillside lots with steeper slopes and more drainage challenges than the flatter west side. Snowmelt from the mountains east of town flows through the city every spring, which puts real pressure on foundations and yards in lower-lying areas near the river.
Ogden Concrete & Masonry has been working in Ogden and the surrounding communities since 2019. We know the difference between what an older brick home near downtown needs and what a newer subdivision on the west side requires. Whether you are dealing with freeze-thaw damage, aging mortar, a sloped lot, or a foundation that has been through too many wet springs, we are familiar with the conditions here and know how to address them correctly.
